In 1968, six years after Captaining the New Zealand Olympic Team, Les Mills opened his first gym in Auckland. Since the beginning, there is a single guiding philosophy, “The job of the fitness industry is to help people fall in love with fitness.”
Today, the Les Mills organisation has 21 programs along with a science and research division. There are over 20,000 clubs with over 140,000 instructors worldwide. From every aspect of the business, Les Mills accepts nothing but the best!
Warren and Mahoney Architects were tasked with the redevelopment of Auckland City’s most prominent gym/fitness facility, Les Mills. The project involved adding three new studios to the Auckland City Campus and a through-site-link connecting Victoria Street and Wellesley Street to the car parks. As expected from a world-class organisation with an eagle-eye on fitness, there is no settling for second best in the physical studio.
The design intent of the through-site-link was to present a welcoming space to the pedestrians moving through the space. The lighting solution incorporates Eclipse linear light behind large polycarbonate panels providing suitable weather protection and mechanical resistance. The lightbox ceiling emulates daylight through the use of white polycarbonate. MHL developed this innovative solution to deliver on the client’s objectives of a welcoming space. In addition to the through-site-link you will find recessed Unios step lights provide subtle floor illumination without glare or distraction in the Immersive Fitness Cycle Studio.
Anyone entering the Les Mills gym knows that they are entering a best-in-class fitness centre from the carpark to the end of the high-intensity class. Nothing but class; nothing but the best!
