A thoughtful passage between contemporary design and the old charm of a 1919 worker’s cottage.

A carefully curated palette of natural materials, including soft timber furnishings and layered draping forms the foundation of the space, softening the industrial character of the warehouse shell. The formation of the tent is achieved through suspending a circular metal frame at the centre of the space, allowing layers of fabric to naturally drape downwards, creating an organic form of an enclosed space. The structure is then surrounded by native plants and foliage of various shapes, heights and sizes, drawing inspiration and paying homage to the diversity of the Australian landscape. Warm 2700K lighting has been intentionally selected to enhance the atmosphere of comfort within the space. As light diffuses softly through the lightweight fabric, intricate shadows and silhouettes of natural landscape are cast throughout the tent.

The installation acts to disconnect its audience from the urban surroundings of Collingwood, inviting them to take a brief escape from the bustle of urban living and immerse themselves into the company of nature and of others. A gentle spatial experience shape soft transitions between the exterior and interior of the tent-like structure, creating a welcoming, intimate and immersive setting for gathering, performance, and conversation. 

A Place Between emphasises togetherness by way of human connection that binds with the core elements of nature, designed to be a momentary quiet place of sanctuary within the wider urban environment.
