Form and feeling: artists’ studies of the twentieth century

From the street-front, Orange remains coherent to its neighbours, preserving the streetscape's historic characters. From the laneway, the rear surface reads as a stack of elements, from brick to shadow, followed by a slender concrete edge that becomes a floating planter, used to shade the terrace, softens the outlook, and from inside, brings greenery directly into view.

Every corner of Orange represents a witty utilisation of space, objects and ideas, as each element is purposefully designed to transform and adapt to the happenings of life. The perfect representation of this strategy is the 'service core' inspired by the 'boat-design' philosophy. The ground floor is anchored by a structure that collects various working parts of a home, from built-in pantry, fridge, sinks, drinks station, to laundry and stairs – designed to absorb the messiness of everyday before it reaches the living areas.

The heart of the home takes an open-plan approach, where the kitchen , dining, living and outdoor space are connected, uninterrupted and welcoming. Throughout the day, it's blessed with an abundance of sunlight, and so the design challenge becomes about carrying that same sense of spatial glow into the evening. Naturally, indirect lighting becomes a priority. Rather than downlights, the overall space relies on a purposeful arrangement of light reflecting from soft curtains, cabinetry, and artworks into the space. Adding depth, task lighting is layered in, positioned atop kitchen island and dining table. Through automations, the lighting is designed to establish spatial hierarchies following the rhythms of the day.

Light is drawn deep into the plan through what Studio Tangara describes as an ‘origami light well’ – a void shaped by a series of angled planes that filter and reflect light down the stairs, creating a bright passage to the upper landing. On the second storey, the master bedroom forms its own retreat, complete with a deep window seat that looks out towards layers of neighbourhood greenery. Similar to the living space below, the master retreat adopts an indirect lighting approach, reflecting light upward onto the roof-defined ceiling to keep the surfaces minimal and visually calm, in keeping with the home’s restrained Scandinavian and Japanese design language.
